Microsoft Recovers from Cloud-Based Software Outage Impacting Thousands of Users

On Thursday, Microsoft confirmed that its cloud-based productivity suite, which includes popular tools such as Word, Excel, and Teams, has fully recovered after a significant outage affected thousands of users. The disruption occurred earlier in the day, impacting connectivity to various Microsoft services.

"We can confirm the issue impacting connectivity to Microsoft services is now mitigated," Microsoft said in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The outage was traced to a change within a third-party internet service provider's (ISP) "managed-environment," which caused widespread service interruptions. Fortunately, once the ISP reverted the change, Microsoft began to see signs of recovery.

This incident follows a similar tech disruption nearly two months ago when a faulty software update from cybersecurity provider CrowdStrike affected 8.5 million Windows devices, crippling essential services across industries such as airlines, banking, and healthcare.

During Thursday's outage, Microsoft's Azure cloud platform also reported issues with customers connecting through AT&T networks. In a statement, an AT&T spokesperson confirmed the disruption but assured that the issue had been resolved: "We experienced a brief disruption connecting to some Microsoft services on our network. The issue has been resolved and connections are operating normally."

At the peak of the outage, more than 23,000 incident reports were logged by Microsoft 365 users. By 10:28 A.M. ET, that number had fallen to about 800 as services were restored.

Downdetector, a platform that tracks service outages, reported seeing over 90,000 user complaints in the United States alone. The disruption affected a wide range of Microsoft services, including Teams, Azure, Xbox, Bing, and the Microsoft Store.

Despite the brief chaos, Microsoft has assured its users that the situation is now under control, and services are back online.
